“… whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Cor 10:31)
So often our prayers focus on our good rather than on the glory of God, but by focusing on the glory of God we actually discover our good.
That is the consequential logic of the first Q&A of our Shorter Catechism:
Q1 What is the chief end of man?
A1 The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
The reality is that we were created for God’s glory and only find our good in relation to Him and from His hand.
How do we glorify God?
We are doing it this morning but putting Him as the priority of our week and in this day by gathering to worship Him. We are glorifying Him in our keeping this day as His day acknowledging Him as both our Creator and Redeemer, and doing so with great joy.
We glorify Him when we are taken up with His person and His work. We glorify God when we dwell on His character and reputation, speaking these realities to Him in praise and speaking of Him to others in praise.
We glorify Him when we humble ourselves before Him, rest content in His providences even if they remain mysterious and challenging to us, looking beyond the providence to see God, trusting Him to work all things for good.
We glorify God when we live our ordinary lives as well as our extraordinary moments as being in His presence and as a vehicle for His honour.
One does not need to ask if you are enjoying God if you are glorifying Him.
