The Pre-Canonical ‘Gospel’: Telling the Jesus Story Before Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

Most Christians assume that the canonical Gospels are the first records of the life and teachings of Jesus. But Luke 1:1 states that “many have undertaken to compile a narrative” about Jesus. What are these prior stories that circulated before the evangelist set pen to paper?

In this public lecture, Dr. Greg Lanier (Ph.D. Cambridge) will discuss the evidence for how the story of Jesus circulated before the four Gospels were written—and what this may mean for how we should approach the Gospels themselves.

Dr. Lanier has been teaching at RTS Orlando since 2016, in the areas of NT exegesis, Greek, and preaching. He has published on NT canon, NT textual criticism, the Septuagint, early Christology, the relationship of the New Testament to the Old, and the exegesis and theology of Luke-Acts.

The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session. Attendees will have an opportunity to win copies of some of Dr. Lanier’s recent books.
